Darrell Hulsey

Entrepreneur and Leader in Healthcare Management

G. Darrell Hulsey has spent more than 35 years building a career as an entrepreneur and executive in healthcare management. Since 2016, he has served as the CEO of Professional Billing, Inc. (PBI), a company that provides revenue cycle and practice management services to physician practices across more than 15 states. He leads a network of over 200 practices while continuing his long-standing commitment to philanthropy, where he has contributed both time and resources to charitable organizations for over three decades.

His career began in 1991 when Darrell Hulsey joined CompMed/Medaphis Physician Services, now McKesson, as a Senior Operations Manager. From the company’s Knoxville, Tennessee, office, he managed hospital-based physician practices in four states. His responsibilities included negotiating managed care contracts, overseeing reimbursement and compliance, and developing new business opportunities in multiple regions.

After three years, he co-founded Medical Management Professionals (MMP) with six partners. Darrell held several leadership roles during his time there and was a key figure in the company’s development. In 1998, the business was acquired by CBIZ, where he advanced to Vice President and later became President and CEO. When the company returned to private ownership in 2013, he continued to lead the company until 2016, when he partnered with PBI. At MMP, the company processed over 34 million procedures, managed $5 billion in client charges, and collected more than $2 billion in revenue. SEC filings recorded $165 million in revenue and $21 million in earnings.

Throughout his work with MMP, he was engaged in every area of operations, including compliance, IT, finance, HR, sales, and mergers. From 2007 to 2013, while serving as President and CEO, he grew revenue from $90 million to $165 million, consolidated 12 billing systems into four, cut operating costs by more than 45%, and reduced staff count by about 35%. Earlier, as Executive Vice President of Operations for the East Region, he expanded the company’s footprint from two states to 10, raised revenues by 83%, and increased profits by 98%.

At PBI, he has overseen revenue growth of 250% between 2016 and 2025. Hulsey led the acquisition and integration of five organizations, achieving 30% cost savings within 18 months of each. He also introduced advanced analytics and AI-driven billing platforms, reducing claim denials by 25%, improving collections by 15% annually, and lowering administrative costs by 40%. His leadership has kept operations aligned with HIPAA and CMS compliance standards.

For more than 35 years, he has supported religious charities and contributed to organizations including St. Jude’s Hospital and the Epilepsy Foundation of America. A graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in Health Management and a concentration in Accounting, he has also supported his alma mater for over three decades.

Born in Haleyville, Alabama, he enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking, and traveling in his free time. Today, Darrell Hulsey continues to guide PBI while balancing his professional role with his commitment to service and philanthropy.
